I wanted to like it because I like the idea of using natural products, and all the parts. To me, drinking coconut water just makes sense. But again...it always tasted blah or wasn't worth the cost.
So I jumped at the chance to review Coco Joy Coconut Water. I mean, what better way to get to know a product than to have it your own home. To refrigerate it, freeze it, try it in a smoothie.
The honest truth is that I went into this thinking it was going to be gross or taste just like water. When the drinks arrived, I popped them into the fridge for a day and held my breath as I popped the first can open.
And I was pleasantly surprised because it actually tasted good. Like coconut. Or like the coconut-y part of a pina colada.
And the whole can was only 30 calories. For people that can't stand to drink plain water, this is a great alternative. Plus it comes with added micronutrients from the coconuts themselves.
I think having only green coconuts must make all the difference because this is the first good coconut water I have ever tasted.
The price is less than exciting, but having just finished tapping maple trees and spending almost a hundred hours converting it into syrup, I have a better appreciation for the cost of extracting and processing natural products. It might be something you get as a treat and if it eventually shows up in bulk at Costco or Sams, then you can stock up.
So far, I have drank it straight and frozen it and scraped it into a granita. It tastes great and makes a refreshing snack - especially as a granita (imagine that in the hot summer!) I think it would be great to use in smoothies or mixed drinks, but I haven't tried that yet. Let me know if you try it and leave a comment below.
