What will your Children be Reading this Summer?

I can't tell you how many articles I have seen that talk about the "summer slide." Our brains and bodies both operate on a "use it or lose it" philosophy. So what are we doing to make sure our children "use it" during summer vacation?
One of the things we're doing is getting our kids involved in the various reading programs offered by area bookstores. Each program requires a certain number of minutes or books to be read in order for the child to receive a reward - usually a free book.
My son is involved with a neighborhood book club for 2nd grade boys. They meet each Monday to discuss a book, play, and eat snacks. Each week, one boy delivers new books to the other members of the group.
We've stopped by the library each week to pick up new books to read each night - and I got really lucky at a few boy-centered garage sales and was able to pick up some creepy, crawly new books for pennies.
Since my daughter is still young, I'm mostly doing the reading for her. But she's also doing a lot of writing practice on her own.
