Deal Pro Save-Up Event - Been There, Done That, Got the T-shirt

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to San Francisco to attend the Savings.com DealPro Save-Up Event. 30 DealPros were selected to be part of a panel of expert savers and deal chasers. I just happened to be one of the lucky ones.

I have to be 100% honest with you when I say that I came away from the event, not having learned very much about saving money. But let me highlight what I did learn:

Key Takeaways from the Deal Pro Save-Up Event
  1. Saving Money is now sexy. Searches for the word "coupon" were up 200% this year.
  2. The savings world is going virtual. Not only can you find coupon codes and even in-store coupons online (at sites like savings.com or retailmenot.com), there are now apps for your I-phone that will give you instant coupons for anyplace you are - via Iphone's built in GPS. Check out getyowza.com for a free app that will send a scannable coupon right to your phone for any participating store in your immediate vicinity. Super cool - like coupons going green (no paper & ink)- but also very Minority Report.
  3. Stores have been giving out sales and coupons more regularly, desensitizing consumers to the word SALE. Expect limited Black Friday deals, but more Cyber Monday activity.
  4. The recession is expected to last into mid 2010.
My personal Takes
  1. Stores have been running many sales, but also jacked their prices a ton over the last 2 years. As a price stalker, I saw 30-50% price hikes in most food products last year. Yes, that means a $1 loaf of bread is now $1.35...no biggie right? Wrong: that's a 35% price hike. Did you get a 35% raise to cover the new increases? Didn't think so. And food isn't the only culprit. Insurance, Gas, utilities, and other goods are up as well. When you take into account sales prices, discounts, and coupons; the savvy consumer can keep prices on par with '07 , but when the sales slow down or disappear, it'll get spendy.
  2. Airport Running is not Fun Running!
  3. Go greener and opt for less stuff this year. This holiday season, enjoy good/quality food and time with friends & family instead. And don't stress, it's supposed to be fun!
  4. Big bloggers blog a lot! I don't want to. I never want my blog to become my life, kwim?
  5. Be careful of great "deals." It's not a good deal if you don't really want it, need it, or can't sell it.
  6. I'm going to personally try to chase even less deals than before. And I never want to become a penny-pincher. Time is more valuable than money...use it wisely!
  7. Sitting for a long time is horrible!
  8. You CAN and SHOULD exercise when you travel. Our hotel had an awesome gym, but I only packed dress shoes, so I did some light Turbulence training and some much needed yoga (read: too much sitting!) in my room. It took less than 15 minutes and made all the difference that day.
  9. I still have no desire to be on television, but I conquered my shyness and spoke to the cameras anyway. :)
The dealpro event was fun; mostly because I got to meet a lot of really neat bloggers who really take blogging seriously. Some of them have even been doing it for 10 years or more! There is some serious money to be made online, but it comes at a price. And I felt content, realizing that I didn't need to go there. :)

Lights, Cameras, and Interviews were everywhere. I was on camera with the CBS early show, and Good Morning America. I also taped an interview for CBS And NBC. Whether they choose to use any of that footage is up in the air, and I'm trying not to give it a second thought. Personally...I'd like to stay off the air, but that's just me. It's no longer in my hands.

I did get a chance to meet some excellent blogging deal-seekers. If you want to check out their sites for up-to-the minute deal posts, click on any of the links below.

In the future, I may be able to offer some of Savings.com's discounts and deals directly on this site. Details are still being ironed out, so stay tuned.

Glad to know you are back! Really appreciated your comment about time. There is more to life than blogging! I am new and amazed at the readers so far - but with 10 kids, it seems to be a balancing act - thanks for all your help.

You know, it sounds like you have a very good head on your shoulders and you have the ability to not get carried away and stay focused and grounded! Good for you!

I think it was great that you were able to talk realistically about what the good and bad points of your trip were. I admire that about you!
