Making Money with your Blog

I've received a lot of emails asking about how to make money blogging. I'm always happy to share what I know (or don't) regarding blogging. I keep meaning to put up some layout and html tutorials. You'll see them pop up eventually. :)

There are some people that make thousands of dollars a month just by blogging. I'm not one of those people. But my blog has made money, about $600 so far. I started my blog at the end of May, but really didn't start writing on it until June, so it's been running about 4 1/2 months.

You can see all my blog advertisers in my sidebar (on the right), but PLEASE do not click on ads willy-nilly. Just click on one's you are legitimitely interested in. :) Some of them give me referrals if you sign up under me, but most of them don't. Either way, here's my honest opinion (and I will tell you if I get a referral or not so you can make an informed decision:)

Swagbucks
If you have a blog, chances are you search the internet frequently for blogging tips, how-to's and to find fellow bloggers. Why not earn money while you search? You can join Swagbucks for free and win at least 1 swagbuck per day. Sign up now and get 3 swagbucks for free.

Just search the way you normally would, but do it at swagbucks.com. The more you search, the more you win. I have never won less than 1 SB per day, but you can win more. On Mega swagbuck days, you can win up to 100SB/day.
Search & Win
Then put a swagbucks banner up on your blog. Anyone that signs up under you will win you more swagbucks. I turn all of mine into Amazon giftcards. It's 45 swagbucks for a 5 amazon card. IMO, that's the best deal, but you can also change them in for paypal cash and other prizes. You can get sweepstakes entries and other prizes for as little as 1 Swagbuck.

IMO, Swagbucks is a must have for all bloggers.

If you sign up through one of my links, it will count as a referral for me.

Google Adsense
This is the easiest ad network to deal with. All you need to do is click a few buttons in blogger and put the ads in your layout. Simple, simple. But a little ugly (no offense google) and you have no control over what ads pop up.

I'm pretty sure no "adult" content comes up but they may advertise things in direct opposition to what you're discussing. That's not usually a problem for me, but if let's say you have a predominantly Christian blog...then they might show anti-christian ads. You may not want that.

This is also a penny maker. When you first start your blog, it may make only pennies a day, but the amount you make increases right along with your blog traffic. If you like the ads, try to make a space for it on your sidebar. Play around with placement to see what sizes/locations/colors you like best.

I do not get a referral for recommending google adsense.

Google Adsense pays out when you reach $100 in commissions

Shareasale
At first this site can be a bit confusing. But once you get the hang of it, it's an easy, reliable network to belong to. You can shop through all their advertisers and select the ads you like. Then you apply to those advertisers (by clicking a button, easy) and wait to see if you are approved. Then copy the code and you're done.

It took a few weeks for them to approve my blog, but I've been happy with shareasale.com. I'm approved for many ads with shareasale but currently only run 2 ads from them .

Ideal Bite gives bite-sized ideas for healthy, light green living.

Idealbite is one of my shareasale.com ads. I like it because I've been getting the idealbite newsletter long before I started blogging. It's a free eco-friendly newsletter filled with great tips on going green and still staying in style. I recommend it to all my friends and feel great about having it on my blog.If you'd like to sign up for this fun, free newsletter, feel free to click on the image above.

Ipsos Survey Panel is a survey company that pays you to take online surveys. This is something I also already do, so it made sense to add to my blog. If you'd like to sign up to take surveys for money and prizes, please click on the image above.

Shareasale has a bunch of great ads that do NOT require people to buy things or click on annoying offers.

If you sign up for Shareasale through one of my links, I may get a small referral commission.

Shareasale pays out when you reach $50 in commissions.

Commission Junction - CJ
CJ is a lot like shareasale. It's full of advertisers and you apply to have their ads on your blog. I was initially turned down when I first applied to CJ, but the second time around, they approved me. I only run the Coupons.com ads from CJ. I print almost all my coupons from Coupons.com and it is completely in line with my blog topics.
Print Free Grocery Coupons at Home
If you see the coupon bar on any of your favorite blogs, print your coupons from them. You'll make your favorite blogger a few cents and you'll get great, legitimate online coupons.

I do not get a referral fee for recommending CJ.

CJ pays out when you hit $50 in commissions.

Ready Site
I belong to readysite, but do not actively display any of their ads. I applied during the blog rush when $25 sign up bonuses were all over the blogosphere. I talked with plenty of bloggers that told me they loved this network.

I put the ads up. It was simple to place but I had little control over exact content. And when I clicked through them I realized they all brought you to annoying "offers pages". You had to click through pages of offers to get to the "free coupon" originally mentioned.

I am not a fan of readysite and wouldn't recommend it. I did originally put up a post about (when they were giving out big referal bonuses) but pulled it the same day I found out what the ads were really all about.

Amazon Affiliates
I have a "my favorites" widget for Amazon on my site. I put in all my favorite products and book recommendations in it. If you click through any of my Amazon links and buy while you're there, I do get a small commission.
Since it doesn't take a lot of effort and I write about a lot of books and things I use anyway, it's an easy one to have. It isn't a huge money maker, but it may be if you blog about a lot of expensive things (electronics, maybe?) and people click through your site and buy.

I do not earn a referral for recommending Amazon. If you buy though one of my links, I will earn commissions.

Amazon pays out when you reach $10 in commissions.

Juice Box Jungle
Last, but certainly not least, is the Juice Box Jungle. I love this advertiser. Why? Because the content is always clean and family friendly. The content is useful for a mom blogger, they run great contests, they pay well, and never require you to buy/sell anything.

Sometimes the juicebox jungle widget has things for sale. But they're always family friendly. You can choose the size of widget you want, I chose huge because it fits my layout and it's my fave advertiser, but you can choose itty bitty if you want.

I do not get a referal for recommending Juicebox Jungle, but I still highly recommend it.

Juicebox jungle pays out when you reach $50 in commissions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Play around with different ads, change up them up to see what works/looks best for your blog, and try to add value without over cluttering. That's tough to do! It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the ad choices. But most ads come in similar sizes so you can group them together and make them "match." Most ad networks update their ads for the holidays too, so you can mix it up over the holidays and keep it fun. :)

Please contact me if you have questions and I'll do my best to answer. There are many other ad networks but these are the only ones I've been affiliated with. Feel free to leave comments if you've come across another great one. If I ever have a blog that makes thousands a month, I'll let you know. :)

What a great post! I have always wondered if it was worth putting ads on my blog, thanks :) And since we're in question mode... Do you mind if I ask one more? You have a HUGE following, how did you get that many readers in such a short amount of time?!

Jessica-MomForHim said...

I'm amazed at how much you've made already! I've been blogging over a year and a half and haven't hit $200 yet--and that's all from coupons.com. The google adsense has only made me about $5 in the past 3 months, so I don't know if that will EVER pay out. I guess if you count swagbucks, I have earned $25 from them so far in $5 Amazon gift cards.

But your traffic volume is INSANE compared to mine. I'm happy it's been so successful for you!

Thanks for the good information. I already do a couple of these, but I'm going to look into the others.

I second the question about how you got so many followers so quickly! Please share on that one also!

Great post! I belong to shareasale, but have yet to receive a penny from it. I tried to sign up for pay per click ads, but it says you have to have made a commission from a sale before you can sign up for ppc.

I'm going to check out some of the ones you recommended!

Whoa!! I definitely need to do a post on increasing your blog followers. :) I actually get a lot of emails about that and respond back to each one, but...it looks like a post is in order.

I wasn't sure if $600 was a lot or little in blogging since most people don't say much about it. I didn't count swagbucks, only because I'm not that organized. I'm not sure how much comes from me or referrals. :) But I still love it and think's worthwhile.

There are so many things I need to post..... lol ....I'll get to them all eventually.

Thanks for the great tips! I will certainly be giving some of them a try.

These are some great tips. I really appreciate your willingness to share them and your honesty in how much you have earned so far. I got a couple of questions: How many visits/pageviews do you get a day? How many hours a day do you spend blogging, visiting other blogs, etc. Again, thank you so much for your transparency!

Angela said...

Dandelions- My visits vary a lot but the lowest number of visits I get per day is 400. I get between 400-1200 a day. It's variable. My average pageviews are 30-40,000 a month.

On blogging I might spend 1-2 hours a day, on twitter (total addict, I admit)...way too much time... and I do visit a lot of blogs. I always like to read/learn, so if I'm not reading books, I'm reading blogs. You should see the recipes I've amassed. I don't know if there is enough "life" to eat all I have planned to make. :)

I'm all about telling it like it is, so you can pretty much ask me whatever. lol

Angela said...

One other thing...I didn't use to blog 1-2 hours a day, the reviews/giveaways are a lot more work than you could imagine. lol ;)

Thanks for sharing! I am having a hard time making money with my blog. I started in May too. So far I have made less than $20. Of course, I have received no payout yet. I belong to Shareasale but it looks complicated. I do run some ads from Commssion Junction. I try to run ads that I would use myself. I am going to check out JuiceBox Jungle.
Thanks again for sharing!

Shareasale is agonizingly complicated, but simple if you stick to just 2 links...the add a sponsor link and the get a link/banner link. Hope that helps.

Wow... thank you so much for all the great information. That took a lot of time and effort to post something for the benifit of the rest of us. It is much appriciated.
I have thought about doing something to make a little money with my blog... I never thought I would accumulate as many followers as I have.
I still like the fact that it is free from all that, but I am definately gonna check out some of your suggestions. I spend soooo much time in the Blog World now... I think it might be time to take it a bit more serious!

Once again, thank you for all the time invested in this very informative post!!!

$600?! How cool! And thanks for sharing your tips and opinions on the various things you've been using! That was very helpful!

Thanks for coming over to visit my blog! You have a pretty lovely blog here! I tried to click over to become a follower, but the widget has a google error on it? I'll be subscribing through google reader instead! :-)

Angela said...

Not sure on the corporate sponsors. I just kind of assumed they would contact me. That's what happens with all my giveaway stuff, so I thought if my blog was worthy, they'd eventually find me. ;)

Jeanne Lubin said...

Re the google ads, they do let you opt out of some categories (like "adult" ads), and also let you choose ads you don't want on your site if they are direct competitors. I like the google adsense program a lot! Have made a few dollars but I definitely don't have enough blog followers yet! :) Thanks for the tips.

Hey, Angela - It's great to see that you updated your money post (we think alike as I also put up a similar static page at my site a little over a week ago, but not as thorough as yours). I also appreciate all the help you provided me personally by email.

When I started my blog back in August, I found Amazon, Commission Junction and Adsense. I've since signed up for Swagbucks, Juicebox Jungle and Shareasale all under your name so you should be seeing some referrals. Thanks also for the Ready Site warning!

Thank you so much for following me back:) I love your advice here. I have 2 blogs. I want to start making some more money with my blog, preferably my homeschool blog The Homeschool Desk, because that one gets the most traffic, and I spend the most time on it, plus I've already earned some small affiliate commissions on that one. I love blogging on Green Acres, but it's getting hard to keep up with both, and that one is more for fun and friendship, ya know? I started GA first, so I'm kind of attached, but I'm kicking myself now for having to split my time between both. I wish I only had 1 blog to keep up with, I don't think I could combine them either. Any advice?

Thanks for sharing how you make $$ from your blog. Jodi from MBC:)

Angela said...

Jodi, I would try to combine them if you can or keep them both and spend less time on the one if you can.

Everyone says you can't have a successful blog if you don't focus (and maybe they are right) but I've never picked an absolute focus and I'm still doing okay. :) I may never have a huge money making blog, but I like to just ramble on this blog and any money it makes is just extra. Know what I mean?

Great article!

I recently started a blog and have been totally going at it by myself, without advice from any experienced bloggers. I ended up on CJ and Amazon on my own, and avoided Adsense because I thought it looked bad too.

It great to hear someone else's experiences with the same companies I've looked at, or are dealing with, as well as to hear about some new ones.

Thanks so much!
