How to make Tasty Brown Rice

Brown rice is a super tasty whole grain alternative to white rice. I bought a huge bag early last year and made it once. The whole family hated it, so we gave the rest of the bag away. But as it turns out, I just wasn't making it right. I thought it was tough to make, but it's actually pretty simple. If you are new to brown rice, I recommend making your rice 1/2 brown and 1/2 white at first. Then as you get more accustomed to the "nutty flavor" of brown rice, you can reduce the amount of white you use.

Here is how I make brown rice:
3 Cups water or chicken stock (I use 2 cups water, 1 cup chicken stock)
1 Cup Brown Rice
1/2 cup White Rice (we still use a little white)

Add the brown rice and water (and/or chicken stock) to a sauce pan with lid. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 35 minutes. Set a timer. After the 35 minute simmer, add the white rice and quickly stir it in. Simmer for another 15 minutes. Turn of the heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes.

Making brown rice is really simple, but does take a little time. Your actual involvement is low, but allow at least 1 hour and 15 minutes from start to finish.

You can make brown rice in the oven and it turns out great...but it most likely costs more to heat up your oven and bake for 50 minutes than to cook on the stove top. If you are already baking something, then it's super easy and cost efficient to use the oven. Quick FYI--brown rice does not cook well in a crock pot. It doesn't cook evenly in the crock pot. But even on the stove top it's pretty much a set it and forget it process (as long as you set a timer).
